Favourite Lunch Recipes for Children – Part One

Jamie Oliver woke us all up to how important it is for our children to eat healthy – at school and at home.  As a parent myself, I know how hard it can be to continuously come up with healthy, easy to prepare meals that children will actually enjoy eating.  We’ve all had the frustration of attempting to feed a child who’s not keen on the food in front of them at the table.

So for the next few posts we’ve decided to share some great recipe ideas from Chef Andy who creates wonderful meals for our children here at Circus in our own Five Star Rated kitchen.

Chef Andy has many years experience cooking for small children and believes wholeheartedly that children need to be fed a healthy diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, to be able to learn and thrive.

As many of the recipes are cooked for over 100 children a day, we’ve not included quantities.  But we are sure you can easily adapt the quantities of the ingredients for any number of servings based on your family’s needs.  You’ll notice that none of the recipes include added sugar or salt and Chef Andy recommends using fresh fruits and vegetables in season whenever possible.

Why not try out one of these meals today and include your children in the cooking process?  Children are always more likely to eat a meal they’ve been involved in preparing.

So without further ado here are several of our children’s favourite lunches

Chicken Pie

Take several diced cooked chicken breasts and mix it with a tin of chicken soup, butter beans, diced par cooked carrots, chopped and cooked leeks and diced swede.  Put all ingredients into an ovenproof container then cover with mashed potatoes.  Pop into oven heated at 200C/400F/Gas 6 for 30-40 mins until golden brown.

Spaghetti Bolognese

Combine Quorn mince, diced peppers, sliced mushrooms, diced onions and tinned tomatoes.  Pour all ingredients into an ovenproof container and bake in the oven a 200C/400F/Gas 6 oven for 45 mins.  Remove from oven, add cooked spaghetti, stir sauce and pasta together and serve.
